About Organizing Sound
Organizing Sound is devoted to transforming your songwriting practice and giving you the tools to write the songs you dream about writing. You won’t learn any secret formulas for generating hit songs, but you will learn how to continuously improve your songwriting.
Hi, I’m John.
I’ve been writing and recording music for the past 26 years. In the process I’ve tried out more than my share of songwriting techniques. Many of them were useless; some have become central parts of my practice.
But what I’ve discovered is that improving and taking control of songwriting is mostly about refining our practice as a whole.
If you want to write music that intrigues and surprises you, and do it with a sense of control and purpose, you need to actively question the way you think about the songwriting process.
Composer Edgar Varèse once said that music is “organized sound”. Often times, people think of songwriting as an esoteric art, more akin to magic than anything. But writing great music is much more about reorganizing materials than creating something out of nothing.
The purpose of this site is to help you start organizing sound in new and surprising ways.
So read on. I’d love to hear what you come up with.
